FAQs / Key Questions

1. Customer

Who should use WiMAX wireless broadband?

Almost anyone can benefit from using WiMAX.

If you answer yes to any of these questions, WiMAX could be for you:

  • Do you need to set up a new Internet connection quickly and easily?
  • Does it take too long to send large files?
  • Do you think your existing broadband service is too slow?
  • Do you need a backup connection because you cannot afford to lose your Internet connection, even for an hour?
  • Do you need to access your office or applications remotely?
  • Do you need to reduce your leased line or SDSL costs?

What can I use WiMAX for?

WiMAX can be used for high speed Internet access, especially in areas where broadband is slow.

This will allow you to:

  • Surf the web
  • Play networked games
  • Transfer large files and photos
  • Access the office remotely
  • Use the Internet to make phone calls

How do I check whether my location is in coverage?

Our WiMAX network is currently in Manchester, Warwick and Milton Keynes. To check whether your location is in coverage, please use the coverage checker on our website.

How long will it take to get the service?

Once you have placed your order, your service will be up and running within 7 working days.

If you need the internal WiMAX device, it will be posted to you and as soon as you receive it, you simply need to unpack it, put it by the window, connect your computer and turn it on. We take care of everything else.

If you need to have the external WiMAX device installed, we will be in touch to arrange for a professional installation.

Can the service be shared?

Yes. To do this, you will need to connect a router with LAN ports or a WiFi network to the WiMAX service. However, under the terms of the WiMAX AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) only users based in the same premises will be permitted to access this service.

What happens when I move to a different location?

As long as your new address is within WiMAX network coverage and you are using the internal WiMAX device, you will be able to simply pick up the device and continue using the service, for no extra cost.

If you are using an external WiMAX device, there will be a charge to de- and then re-install the device at your new address, but other than that you will be able to carry on as before.

2. Network

What is WiMAX?

WiMAX is the latest high speed wireless data networking technology. Operating at the Ofcom licensed frequency of 3.6GHz, WiMAX is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard and is delivered using equipment from a world leader in WiMAX technology.

How fast is WiMAX?

FREEDOM4's WiMAX network currently supports upload and download speeds of up to 4Mbps.

What is the difference between WiMAX and WiFi?

WiMAX and WiFi are complementary.

The key difference is that WiMAX is a licensed, carrier-grade long range data communications network which connects you to the Internet, whereas WiFi is an unlicensed, wireless local area network with shorter ranges.

What is the range of WiMAX?

Usually, indoor devices can be up to 1km away from the WiMAX network base station, and external devices up to 2km away.

Is WiMAX secure?

WiMAX was designed with security in mind. All user traffic is encrypted using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), before being securely routed through the network.

Is WiMAX safe?

Yes. All the devices meet ICNIRP reference levels that represent safe operating standards. These guidelines are based on a considerable body of independent peer reviewed research from around the world and are recommended by the UK's Health Protection Agency and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

How do trees, rain and fog affect the WiMAX network?

The WiMAX network works at a high frequency so trees, snow and fog do have an effect on the network coverage.

Our planning tools take these things into consideration and so, if it has been confirmed that WiMAX is available in your area, the network should be available all year round, regardless of the weather.

Is WiMAX available internationally?

Yes. There are hundreds of companies supplying WiMAX technology across the world and there are live networks in places as diverse as Australia, America, Taiwan and Malta.

3. Service

Do I need to have a phone line (existing or new) installed in order to have the WiMAX service?

No. This is one of the key strengths of WiMAX. Our service is wires free and there are none of the telephone line rental costs associated with other broadband services.

Can the service operate alongside any existing ADSL service?

Yes. It is independent of any other DSL or cable services and telephone lines.

How do I connect my computer to the WiMAX service?

The easiest way to do this is to connect a computer network cable to both the WiMAX device and your computer. WiFi can also be used.

How much does it cost?

The cost depends on the type of service you buy. Typically, there is a set up and then a flat monthly fee which includes all usage charges.

How quickly can I get my Internet connection restored if I am using WiMAX as a backup Internet connection?

It will depend on how your network has been configured, however the WiMAX network is always ready for traffic. This means that as soon as your routers detect the primary route has gone down, it should only take a few seconds to get all the traffic transferred onto the diverse WiMAX network.

Can I have a static IP address?

Yes - let us know if you want a static IP address when you place your order.

Can I have more than one IP address?

No. Every WiMAX device is allocated a single IP address.

It is possible to connect multiple computers to a WiMAX device using a router.

Can I run my VPN over WiMAX?

Yes. The higher bandwidth JustData and DataMax services are ideally suited for this sort of application.

Can I run VoIP over WiMAX?

Yes. The bandwidth and latency characteristics of the WiMAX network means that it is reliable in delivering voice over IP.

4. Devices

What type of equipment is used to deliver the WiMAX service?

Both external and internal WiMAX devices are available. These devices are compact, low power and easily installed.

What equipment do I need to supply?

We will provide everything needed to connect to the WiMAX network - either an internal or external WiMAX device.

If you need to connect more than one computer to the WiMAX network, you will need a router. These are available from most high-street computer shops.

How are the WiMAX devices powered?

The internal WiMAX devices are powered by standard mains power.

The external WiMAX devices are powered using Power over Ethernet, so only a single connection is required to connect the external equipment to the computer inside.

5. Terms and Conditions

Do I need permission to install the service?

You do not need permission to install the internal WiMAX device.

External devices do require the approval of the owner of the building or dwelling. A guidance document is available from www.communities.gov.uk, and is known as "A Householder's Planning Guide for the Installation of Antennas, including Satellite Dishes."

What happens when I exceed my usage allowance?

FREEDOM4 has a fair usage policy. Should you exceed your usage allowance on a regular basis, we will advise an alternative product or terminate the contract.

Can I accumulate my allowance over a number of months?

Your allowance is a monthly figure and it does not roll over.

What is the acceptable usage policy?

FREEDOM4 believes in an open and safe Internet. Our acceptable use policy outlines the principles that govern the usage of our WiMAX network. Details can be found here.
